Inspiration
FloodLink was born out of the need to address the recurring and catastrophic floods in Bangladesh, where millions of people are affected by loss of life, crops, and infrastructure every year. Living in a flood-prone nation ourselves, we saw how people were often alerted to floods too late to do anything. Research has shown that early warning can make a huge impact in terms of reduced damage and loss of life by providing people with time to prepare.
What it does
FloodLink is an IoT-based flood warning and prevention system. It is used for the real-time monitoring of environmental conditions. Sensors are used to detect rain and water level conditions. The data is then processed, and the prediction of water logging is made. According to the prediction, alerts are sent to the users, and the water is pumped out. The focus is shifted from the mitigation of floods to the prevention of floods.
How we built it
We designed FloodLink by integrating IoT sensors, AI models, and automated hardware devices. We used rain gauges and water level sensors to obtain real-time information, which is then sent wirelessly using WiFi and cloud technology. The AI model uses the real-time and historical data to predict the flood level. We used the ESP8266 as a control device, which can automatically trigger a pump using a smart switch. It is a single device that incorporates real-time monitoring, prediction, and action.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was to ensure the accurate collection of data in real-time under unpredictable environmental conditions. Another challenge was training the AI system using limited historical data. Lastly, synchronizing hardware components with software was another challenge. Lastly, affordability was another challenge that had to be addressed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to say that we have secured the 3rd position at the national level for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which proves the impact and innovation of our idea. We were successful in designing a working concept that incorporates the use of IoT, AI, and Automation within a single system. Most importantly, we were successful in creating a solution to a real-world problem, which affects millions of people across the country of Bangladesh and the world at large.
What we learned
Through this project, we were able to understand the capabilities of technology to solve real-life issues facing our society. We were also able to get hands-on experience with IoT technologies, AI models, and hardware-software integration. Furthermore, we were able to understand the need for user-centered design, where the solution should be affordable, accessible, and usable. Additionally, we were able to understand that early warning systems are not just tools but lifesaving systems.
What's next for FloodLink
The next step is to develop a prototype that is fully functional and implement it in real flood-prone areas. Our goal is to work with organizations like governments and disaster management bodies to scale up the solution. In the future, we plan to extend FloodLink to South Asia and also incorporate more advanced AI models for greater accuracy. Our dream is to have thousands of units deployed and create a sustainable system that can save millions of lives from the threat of floods.
