Floods are one of the most dangerous natural calamities affecting people worldwide . Even right now(during the typing of this description ) , Pakistan is suffering from floods . In a study conducted in 2020, it is estimated that 1.81 Billion people are at risk of being affected by floods worldwide . While looking at the numbers , most of the victims suffer from fatal and non-fatal injuries during floods while some losing their lives in the disaster . More than UD$40 billion in property damage was reported alone in Pakistan floods 2022 with 500k+ people in need of relocation. Some of the common issues during these floods were: -Lack of healthcare for injured and sick people -Need of emergency relocation facilities for people stuck in flood prone areas -Lack of food and living resources
What it does
We have proposed and implemented an Emergency Relocation and healthcare system using an online/offline android application for helping flood victims to get emergency resources , food , healthcare and relocation facilities . Some of the most useful features of our Android application are:
- Offline SOS functionality to send SOS to nearby helplines during dangerous -Relocation functionalities with list of safer areas nearby along with directions on Maps -Emergency Healthcare Facility to order medicines , first-aid , resources , food and ambulance in case of a fatal injury during floods . -Easy login for new NGOs, helplines , rescuers since App is not exclusive to any organization i.e. any new rescuing team coming in area can easily access SOS and healthcare requests coming from that area. -Funding system for people in safer areas to directly fund helplines in front to help people stuck in flood prone areas.
How we built it
We built the application using Android Studios. Technologies that we used: Java xml SQL databases For UI designing : Figma Online Designing Tool APIs used for the project : Twilio (for SMS , data and calling) Google Maps Places ( for implementing maps and locations in the application) Weather and Geolocation API (for weather data and forecasting)
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges that we ran into were: -Need of thorough research on the subject. -Lack of Flood focused APIs. -Learning curve of Android studios for beginner developers of the team. -Brainstorming whole project from the scratch
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to brainstorm the whole idea and form a hard-working and co-operating team within the timeframe of Hackathon were also able to come-up with the design and APIs implemented in the project on time.
What we learned
We learned many hard and soft skills during the project and hackathon. We: -learned to thoroughly research a subject. -learned using figma and android studios for designing and implementing a project. -learned to work as a team -learned to co-operate with others to fulfil common objectives -learned problem solving and brainstorming skills
What's next for Flood Relief
Flood Relief is in development stage . The frontend has been completed for the project and backend for functionalities have been selected. Once the project is completed , it will impact and help 50+million people worldwide.
