Inspiration
Floods are one of the most frequent and devastating natural disasters, especially in vulnerable regions. We were inspired to build a solution that could provide early warnings and actionable guidance to help save lives and reduce damage.
What it does
Flood Safety is a real-time web app that monitors flood risk, sends early alerts, and provides safety recommendations. It helps users understand danger levels in their area and guides them on what actions to take before and during a flood.
How we built it
We built the app using a modern web stack with a responsive frontend and a backend that processes environmental and weather-related data. We integrated APIs for real-time updates and implemented logic to assess flood risk and trigger alerts. The UI was designed to be simple, fast, and accessible.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was handling real-time data and ensuring accuracy in risk prediction. We also faced difficulties in designing a system that is both informative and easy to use under stressful situations. Integrating multiple data sources smoothly was another hurdle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a functional prototype that delivers real-time alerts and clear safety guidance. We’re proud of building something impactful within a limited time and focusing on usability for people in emergency situations.
What we learned
We learned how to work with real-time data, improve teamwork under time pressure, and design user-centric solutions for critical scenarios. We also gained experience in problem-solving and rapid prototyping.
What's next for Flood Safety
Next, we plan to improve prediction accuracy using machine learning, expand data sources, and add features like location-based evacuation routes and offline alerts. We also aim to collaborate with local authorities for real-world deployment.
