A calm study workspace that actually works

💡 Inspiration

Students don’t fail because they lack tools — they fail because tools are noisy, overwhelming, and unreliable. We asked a simple question:

What if a study app reduced cognitive load instead of adding to it?

FLONIQ was built to feel calm, honest, and dependable—especially under pressure.

🧠 What FLONIQ Does

FLONIQ is a minimal student workspace designed for focus and consistency.

Core ideas:

No fake productivity metrics

No demo data

No distracting visuals

Everything visible actually works

Features:

Clean task management (starts empty, stays real)

Protected login with email verification

Optional Study Buddy (AI-assisted help when available)

Curated study quotes with a manual refresh button

Graceful offline and failure handling

✨ Why It’s Different

Most productivity apps try to motivate. FLONIQ tries to get out of the way.

Empty-by-default → feels honest

Stable-by-design → no crashes, no surprises

Calm UI → reduces mental fatigue

AI is optional → never a dependency

Reliability over flash. Focus over features.

🛠️ How We Built It

Frontend: React + Vite + Tailwind CSS

Backend: Node.js + Express

Auth: Email-based authentication with verification

Database: MongoDB

AI (optional): Gemini (isolated, quota-safe)

Deployment: Frontend on Vercel, backend isolated

We intentionally removed anything that couldn’t be made stable.

⚠️ Challenges

Handling AI rate limits without breaking the app

Removing all demo/mock data to avoid “fake” experiences

Designing graceful states for offline or paused features

Shipping a clean MVP under a tight deadline

Key decision:

If a feature isn’t reliable, it shouldn’t appear at all.
