Inspiration
Over 2 billion people worldwide lack reliable access to safe drinking water, and millions of wells fail each year due to poor placement, contamination, or declining groundwater. We realized that the problem is not just physical, it is informational. Satellite and environmental data already exists, but it is fragmented and inaccessible to the communities and organizations that need it most. We asked a simple question: What if anyone could see where a well should actually be built before drilling?
What it does
Flo is a geospatial AI platform that aggregates satellite imagery, hydrology, topography, and contamination data to generate a Water Viability Score for potential well sites. Users can select a global view or a specific region to identify optimal well locations, reducing failed drilling projects, conserving resources, and ensuring long-term access to safe water. Flo transforms complex environmental data into accessible and understandable information for equitable water planning.
How we built it
- Languages & Frameworks: Flutter, Dart, TypeScript, Node.js, C++ , Swift, Shell, Script
- Databases & APIs: Firebase, Google Earth Studio Database, Gemini API, Vertex AI
- Tech Highlights: Normalizing and weighing hydrology, precipitation, topography, and avoidance datasets to calculate optimal well locations
Challenges we ran into
- Using Flutter for the first time and learning its ecosystem
- Learning the intricacies of Google technologies like the Gemini API
- Aggregating and processing large-scale geospatial and environmental datasets
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a platform capable of analyzing global water well locations
- Successfully normalized and weighed multiple environmental factors to produce actionable Water Viability Scores
- Created an interface that allows users to explore optimized well locations regionally or globally
What we learned
- How to process, normalize, and combine diverse geospatial datasets
- Best practices for integrating Flutter with backend APIs and cloud databases
- The importance of making technical environmental data accessible to non experts
- How vital the global water access issue truly is and the impact better information can have
