Inspiration

My friends and I were browsing reddit when we saw this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/kr12jw/this_is_genius/) that talked about the idea of an app that could help a group of friends choose a movie to watch together that was well liked by the group as a whole. This seemed like a pretty cool idea, solving an immediate and relatable problem that many of us personally encountered. And what better time to try and build such an app than in a hackathon!

What it does

Flixie gives you and your squad personalized recommendations to smoothen the process of choosing a film to watch together. Users can create groups, add people to groups, choose their movie genre preferences, like/dislike movies, generate movie matches with Artificial Intelligence (not implemented due to time constraints)

How We built it

The app was built entirely using React Native. For the UI/UX pointers, we drew a couple of pointers from the likes of some big applications such as Tinder and TikTok. We also experimented with Firebase in the management of data, but later decided to drop it due to the lack of time.

Challenges We ran into

One obvious challenge would be the time crunch that we are faced with. Due to the 24 hour time window to ideate, prototype, design, and build an entire application from scratch, it was extremely difficult to focus on several aspects of the application at once. Another challenge that we faced was keeping the UI/UX as consistent as possible, so as to give a smooth and pleasant experience to the user.

Accomplishments that We are proud of

One thing that we are proud of is that despite the extreme time pressure, the team managed to work together in a cohesive and efficient manner. Despite the lack of sleep, our team was able to keep a high morale by joking and learning together as a team. More importantly, we were able to achieve most of the objectives that we set out for ourselves at the start of the hackathon.

What We learned

We learned how to be a more efficient mobile developer, as using react native was no easy feat, with several bugs faced along the way.

What's next for Flixie

AI, chatting funcionality, integration with platforms
