FlipSide

Inspiration

The inspiration for Flipside stemmed from a desire to create a platform that encourages healthy debates, fosters diverse perspectives, and ultimately promotes collaboration and unity through acknowledging valid arguments.

What it does

Flipside is a social media app that allows users to create either private or global argument posts. In private posts, users can share their arguments and ideas with themselves and their approved connections only. Users can engage in nested comments, like other users' argument ideas, and track the number of comments on each argument post. Once a post reaches 10 comments, the app calculates and displays how many individuals have changed sides, highlighting the power of unity and understanding diverse viewpoints.

How we built it

We built it with firebase database for real time communication, react to reuse components, tailwind for styling the componenets, we initially planned out the backend features such as nested comments in c++ to understand how to efficiently model them using data structures

Challenges we ran into

-simulate the switching of sides without letting a user double vote

• controlling like feature to not self like
• ensuring the post is visible to connections only and not pending connections
• re rendering after updates to update real time

Accomplishments that we're proud of

-create a nested comment thread -provide privcay to users in form of private posts and anonymous profiles

• easily engaing UI and like system
• simulating a real debate and switching of sides through real time changes

What we learned

-learned to implement real time friend requests and chats -learned to use recursion and other data structures to make the program efficient

What's next for FlipSide

-adding timing based post deletion -upvoting to extend time for interesting dicussions

• implementing an AI/ML model to filter out negative comments -more modernized and user friendly UI
