Inspiration
I am currently a STEM camp leader for my college. This past year the elementry school camps were held virtually. We wanted all of the camps to have hands on projects but it was difficult since even with a suplied list, kids were not able to bring all of the required materials. This is why I decided to make Flip the Script and make a website that provides alternate materials to possible hands on projects as well as some sample lectures.
What it does
Flip the Script is a website that provides educational resources to teachers as well as students. It also allows users to interact with it to create a community of educators to allow the website to grow as an educational resouce.
The main lessons are related to the enviroment in hope that if kids gain more awaireness of it, they will become more mindful of how they interact with it. The materials page is created to show a list of possible materials that a kid could possibly use if they don't have access to something that is needed for these lessons. Although this materials list if specifically for the lessons it can also be used a resouce for teachers to look at for their own lessons.
How we built it
I build this website using wix, google slides, padlet and echoAR. A lot of the time was put into creating lecture slides for the website.
Challenges we ran into
At first I tried to use a website builder but it was really difficult to use. I have never made a website that was very interactve with the user. So I wanted to use a website that was already created to help me out but the original one did not allow me to embed anything into it. So I switched to WIX because it was easier to use so that I could focus more on what the website was actually suppost to do. Another challenge I has was the night the hackathon started my power and thus my wifi went out. I wasn't able to fix this and so I just had to wait a long time for the storm to pass. My last problem was of course the time constraint.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was very proud of how the final project came out, expecially since this was my second hackathon! I was able to create a lot of things that I thought I wouldnt be able to in such a short amount of time.
What we learned
During this project I learned about html. I also learned about EchoAr and how easy it is to use. I am hoping that during my next hackathon I can create an entire website from scratch, hopefully with a team though.
What's next for Flipping the Script: Education for Everyone
I am hoping that I will be able to continue adding materials and other lesson plans. I think it would be awsome to market it so that I can grow a community that can help me with the STEM summer camps.
