Inspiration
On the way to the Georgia Aquarium, a trip that my friends had long awaited, one was complaining about the fact that he doesn't have the opportunity to visit all these fantastic animals since he doesn't live in Atlanta. That's when he off-handedly suggested a website that could compile animal live streams into one place for you to watch.
What it does
The website is the center of everything. It hosts the live-streaming functionality that allows you to view live streams of animals from around the web and offers information regarding our other projects geared towards conservation. This website is functional for both mobile and desktop users.
How we built it
The website's UI was primarily put together using Wix's in-house design elements, but in order to gather all the live streams in one place we needed a web scraper to go through live streams that fit our qualifications and send them over to the website. The NFTs were made separately and so was the cryptocurrency, but everything was made by team members.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring our work was well managed was a big challenge. Wix only allows one editor to work on the website at a time so coordination was key though lacking. The biggest problem to be overcome was setting up the web scraper, as even though we had access to the YouTube API and Chrome HTML, webpage security made retrieving the necessary information difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The making of the NFT collection and cryptocurrency are definitely up there in terms of what we're proud of. We did not expect to be making something like this when we first started, but we realized that aside from just a website that livestreams animals, we could work on other methods to raise awareness and money. YouTube livestreams offer donations and those can add up to over $13k, so we know that people are definitely willing to help monetarily.
What we learned
Two of the members of the team had 0 experience using Git prior to this hackathon and we all had to use it, which was a good learning experience. UI design was also important for the member who worked on the website to ensure that it wasn't messy and instead a rather clean experience. The creation of an NFT, cryptocurrency, and web scraper were also all processes we had to learn while we worked on this project.
What's next for Flipper
The next steps would be to firstly list our cryptocurrency on a publicly traded exchange, which requires documentation and approval by the companies such as CoinBase. Further creating NFTs and working with zoos and conservation groups will also prove to be very helpful in making progress as ultimately they are who this project is meant to benefit. The improvement of algorithms regarding choosing which live streams to suggest and categorizing them is also a goal that we will work on to make the website more user friendly.
