Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from one of our team members. His grandpa suffers from Parkinson's disease and is unable to read books independently so he wanted to make a device to help assist his grandpa with reading.
What it does
Using an Android app, we used OCR to recognize the words on the page and the page number. The user controls the app through voice commands i.e "next page." Our device flips to specific pages within a book and reads back the text with Text-to-Speech. The angle of the reading frame can be adjusted using voice control.
How we built it
Using cardboard to build the frame. Step motors and servos in a particular sequence to flip pages. Android phone for microphone and camera for voice control and image recognition and for powering the Arduino.
Challenges we ran into
We had some difficulty with hardware and debugging for our app, especially with speech to text software and number recognition .
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Implementing the text recognition component of our app.
What we learned
We learned that android studio isn't our favorite and that we can survive and function on 2 hours of sleep.
