Inspiration
The inspiration for Fling the Snoo was to bring classic, addictive physics-arcade gameplay directly into the Reddit feed. We wanted to take Reddit's iconic mascot, the Snoo, and put players in control of its flight path. By combining simple, intuitive fling mechanics with unpredictable environmental challenges like shifting winds and adjustable gravity, we created a game that is easy to pick up but highly challenging to master.
What it does
In Fling the Snoo, players launch a bouncy Snoo character from a slingshot. The goal is to navigate a series of aerial obstacles, pop colorful balloons, collect stars, and stick a safe landing.
Key features include:
- Dynamic Wind System: Wind direction and speed change with every flight (ranging from Calm to Breezy and Stormy), pushing your Snoo off course.
- Adjustable Gravity Modes: Players can toggle gravity settings (Chill, Standard, Heavy) to completely change the physics dynamics.
- Real-time Stat Tracking: Tracks Flights, Stars, Upvotes, Streaks, and your Best scores.
- Immersive Audio: Features background music (BGM) and sound effects for popping balloons, collisions, and landing flops.
How we built it
We built the game using Phaser 3 as our core physics and rendering engine, writing the game logic in TypeScript. We then packaged the entire frontend webview inside Reddit Devvit, allowing the game to load, run, and scale perfectly within a native Reddit post.
Challenges we faced
One of the main challenges was translating complex vector math for wind resistance and launching trajectories into smooth, 60fps gameplay inside a Devvit webview frame. We also spent a lot of time fine-tuning the collision hitboxes for the obstacles to ensure that every landing, bounce, and crash felt physically realistic and fair to the player.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the game's polish! The particle effects when popping balloons, the trail path showing your launch trajectory, and the responsive physics feel amazing. Additionally, setting up a fully working dev-to-playtest pipeline on Devvit and seeing the game run natively on mobile was a massive milestone.
What we learned
We learned a lot about how to optimize webview assets for quick loading times within Reddit's ecosystem. We also gained a deep appreciation for physics-based level design—even tiny tweaks to gravity values can completely change how fun or difficult a level feels.
What's next for Fling the Snoo
We want to implement Reddit-native features! The next steps are:
- Global Subreddit Leaderboards: Using Devvit's Redis storage to save and display daily high scores.
- Reddit Avatar Skins: Letting players unlock skins based on their actual Reddit Snoovatar.
- In-Game Map Editor: Allowing players to build and share their own custom obstacle courses directly in the comments.
