Inspiration
The YouTuber Flamingo inspired me. Something that started out as a bit of a joke became my first fully released project. Flamingo created an experience in Roblox Studio called Mr Beast Land which was his hilarious take on the park that Mr Beast opened in Saudi Arabia. Since I am a former Roblox developer I took this as a challenge. I wanted to make something better but still give a friendly nod to the original concept. I have been trying to get games out forever and could never complete a project. I have plenty of game ideas and I got tired of waiting for someone to create a game that a 29 year old gamer of 25 years would want to play.
What it does
Flim Flam Land is a social and interactive amusement park that holds secret gameplay where players clip into the backrooms and have to escape. It functions as a deceptive experience. On the surface it is a bright and fun theme park but underneath it tells the story of The Broken Fam. Obsessed and scorned fans of Flamingos old channel AlbertsStuff.
How we built it
I grew up having a fascination with technology. This even led my father to create my gamertag FlexiwitdaTech later on in life. I utilized the Meta Horizon Desktop Editor heavily for this project. After trying engines like Garrys Mod and Lovr I felt more at home here due to the similarity to Roblox Studio. I used the help of many tutorials, documents, public assets, Especially assets that had scripts, and AI generations to assist me, a single person with a million ideas.
Challenges we ran into
Regardless of my use of AI bugs happen and sometimes not even the AI can figure it out. Just a few days ago I had a mental breakdown trying to figure out NavMesh for my AI NPCs. No AI (Copilot, ChatGPT, Meta, Gemini) could help me. I spent 12 hours a day for two days straight trying to figure this out. I eventually realized (from previous conversations with AI and checking a template) that my NavMesh was too small and not lowered beneath the terrain far enough.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am most proud that I actually finished something. I have been trying to get games out forever and could never complete a project because of my ambitions. Flim Flam Land was an idea that came to me at a point in my life where I am more motivated and I feel more aligned. I went from having a million game ideas with no direction to releasing a functioning game.
What we learned
I learned that sometimes not even the AI can figure it out which forced me to read and pay attention. I learned how to set up game systems and what causes certain script errors. The NavMesh struggle specifically taught me how to truly troubleshoot when the automated tools fail.
What's next for Flim Flam Land
The significant updates I am currently working on are additional maps. Because it was originally supposed to be a simple amusement park the first backrooms map is small. I decided to add larger and more detailed backrooms maps to tell the story of The Broken Fam. Any other changes will be quality of life updates for mobile (the games I make are intended for web and mobile).
