Inspiration
Flightprint was created to make the environmental impact of air travel more accessible and easier to understand. Although travelers can readily compare flight prices and durations, the carbon emissions associated with each journey are often overlooked. Our goal is to help travelers make more informed decisions by bringing the environmental impact of air travel into consideration.
What it does
Flightprint calculates the estimated CO₂ emissions of a flight based on the selected airports, cabin class, and number of passengers. It translates these figures into relatable environmental comparisons, including the carbon emissions from driving an average U.S. car, the amount of carbon absorbed by a tree, and the average annual carbon emissions of one person. By presenting emissions in an accessible format, Flightprint helps users better understand the environmental footprint of air travel.
How we built it
We built Flightprint with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the website’s structure, styling, and interactive features. AirportsData provided airport information, while Python and JSON helped us process and organize the data for use in the application. JavaScript powers the flight calculator and enables users to adjust their travel settings. We also developed calculations that translate estimated flight emissions into more relatable environmental comparisons.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was getting the flight calculator to display properly on the website.

We are especially proud of Flightprint’s visual design, including its color scheme, typography, and layout.
What we learned
Building Flightprint strengthened our understanding of JavaScript, Python, and JSON, particularly in processing data and implementing interactive functionality.
What's next for Flightprint
We hope to expand Flightprint by developing an interactive map that visualizes the carbon footprints of flights around the world.
