Inspiration
Three of our members produce regularly produce music and found modern music control to be inconvenient and limiting. We decided to design a solution to improve quality of life in music related editing and controls, not just for producers but also everyday consumers.
What it does
- Flic executes a command after the command activation gesture is performed.
- In listener mode: Flic can pause, play, skip, rewind, and increase and decrease volume at different speeds of the current music player.
- In MIDI mode: Flic can control any parameter (pitch, tempo, phasor, high pass, low pass, etc) in FL Studio and trigger sounds.
- Flic is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android (in theory).

Challenges we ran into
- Miscommunication
- Bottleneck of design process and duties
- Accidental shorting when soldering perfboards
- Gesture calibration
- Different enclosure sizes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Flic is intended to function regular use, not only a submission for a competition
- Can be useful for everyone who listens to music on a regular basis
- 6 distinct gestures can be reliably detected
- No accidental gesture activation
- LCD screen reflects every motion in real time
- Flic can seamlessly interface with streaming services and digital audio workstations
- Flic is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android (in theory).
What we learned
It's important to communicate with others. It's also important to know when to cut your losses/pivot.
What's next for Flic.
We want a more sleek, compact, fashionable design that caters to an audience that loves music and art! Minaturize. Power board with rechargeable battery. Move from breadboard to perfboard to PCB. Add more command gestures for more commands (6+ commands per command gesture). Elegant enclosure.
