Inspiration
We work out, but without a coach it’s hard to know whether our form is right. Bad form can mean slower progress or even injury. Tracking what we eat was a separate hassle in a different app. Then we saw a concept video of a fitness app that watches you exercise through your phone camera. We wanted to build a simpler, real version for people like us who train on their own. That became Flex Hard: it checks whether you’re doing an exercise correctly, tracks your calorie intake, and suggests meals using AI, all in one place.
How we built it
We planned before writing any code. We wrote a scope to keep the project small, a PRD describing every screen, and a technical spec choosing a phone-friendly web app. Then we built Flex Hard in 10 small slices, each with tests, and tried the app every few slices to give feedback. Our favorite moment was seeing the camera check work for the first time, because that was when we knew the main idea was real.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was getting the look right. We wanted Flex Hard to feel bold and motivating, but the fonts and colors took several rounds of feedback before the app looked and felt the way we pictured it.
What we learned
Our biggest lesson was how to work with AI as a partner. Instead of asking it to build everything at once, we let it ask us questions, and we made the decisions. We also learned that apps are built step by step: build a small piece, test it, try it, then move on.
