Inspiration

We all enjoy working out and wanted to build something related to that for the health category.

What it does

The muscle sensors measure your muscle stimulation and the LED ring moves towards the player with more muscle activty during your work out. When the ring gets all the way to your side you win.

How we built it

To build it, we had to go through two main processes. One was the hardware development with the arduino microcontroller to take in data from the muscle sensor and control the stepper motor. The game modes were also controlled by a gesture sensor and displayed on an OLED display. The other part was the CAD for the pulley system. We designed the parts on Solidworks and then 3D printed and machined them.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was that there was not belt that we could use, so we had to be resourceful and figure out how to do it using duct tape.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of getting this whole system working, especially the mechanical aspect interfacing with the hardware. We had to work within the time constraints given to make sure we had all of our prints done on time, and then precisely machine the pulley system to not slip and have enough tension, so that it would turn with the stepper motor.

What we learned

We learned about mechanical integration and how to take a project from the idea stage to sourcing all of the parts and building both the mechanical and electrical aspects, all while writing the software controlling it all. It was definitely a great team effort.

What's next for Flex off

Next, we want to tune the controls of the pulley system and in the future add a second dimension to the pulley system to make a more intricate game with more intricate rules.
