Inspiration

As international students ourselves, we’ve lived the quiet ache of missing home—the lullabies of distant cities, the chatter of familiar languages, the everyday sounds that once formed the backdrop of our lives. Fleeting Melodies (FM) was born from that longing.

We created FM to be more than just a radio app—it’s a bridge between where we are and where we come from. A way to reconnect with our roots through the universal language of sound. For every person far from home, FM offers comfort, belonging, and the feeling that—even across oceans—home is just a frequency away.

What it does

Fleeting Melodies (FM) transforms the intangible ache of nostalgia into an immersive digital experience. It brings the tactile, sensory emotions of the physical world—like the warmth of a hometown song or the sound of streets you grew up on—into the digital space.

By streaming live radio paired with real visuals of cities across the globe, FM helps users reconnect with places they love, cultures they miss, and parts of themselves they may have left behind. Our purpose is to make distance feel smaller, emotions feel heard, and memories feel real again.

How we built it

We began with extensive user research, speaking to fellow international students and individuals living away from home to understand the emotional weight of nostalgia and what brings comfort from afar. These insights shaped our early ideation phase, where we brainstormed ways sound and visuals could be used to recreate the feeling of home.

From there, we moved into low-fidelity wireframing, sketching out initial concepts and mapping user flows. This helped us visualize the core features and structure of the app without getting lost in the details too early.

Once our ideas took shape, we transitioned to Figma to create a digital version of the app. We divided the workload across the team—some focused on interface design, others on interaction flow and prototype linking—to ensure a smooth and efficient process. Through collaborative iteration, we brought FM to life as a fully interactive prototype that reflects both the emotional intention and practical functionality of the experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was during the initial ideation phase. We had a strong emotional foundation—homesickness, memory, and sound—but translating those abstract feelings into a concrete, functional app concept took time.

We struggled with narrowing down what features would truly serve our purpose without overwhelming the experience. There were many directions we could have taken, but finding the right balance between emotional depth and technical feasibility was a key hurdle.

It took several brainstorming sessions, mind maps, and user feedback loops before we landed on the idea of combining live radio with visuals of different cities. It was a challenge to distill something so personal and complex into a simple, intuitive experience—but that challenge became the heart of what makes FM special.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of how deeply personal this project became—not just for us, but for the people we shared it with. Turning a shared emotional experience into a thoughtful digital product was no small feat, and seeing it resonate with others was incredibly rewarding.

We’re especially proud of how we translated abstract feelings like nostalgia and belonging into a functional, emotionally intelligent app experience. From ideation to prototyping, every decision was driven by empathy and storytelling.

What we learned

Working on Fleeting Melodies helped us understand that designing for emotion goes far beyond visuals or features—it’s about recreating the feeling of physical, human moments in digital form.

We learned how to translate intangible, sensory experiences—like the warmth of a familiar song or the ambient sounds of a hometown—into something interactive and meaningful. This process pushed us to think more deeply about how digital tools can evoke comfort, connection, and nostalgia.

Finally, we gained valuable experience in ideation, wireframing, prototyping, and collaboration—learning how to take an abstract concept and turn it into a cohesive, functional, and emotionally resonant app.

What's next for Fleeting Melodies

Our next step is to move beyond the prototype and begin user testing with a broader audience. We want to gather real feedback from people who live far from home—international students, expats, travelers—and understand how FM can evolve to better meet their emotional and sensory needs.

We also plan to explore technical feasibility for integrating real-time radio streaming and live visual feeds of cities around the world. This would deepen the immersive experience and bring users even closer to the places they miss.

In future versions, we hope to add features like personalized soundscapes, journal prompts, or even voice memos from loved ones—continuing to bridge the gap between digital space and emotional memory.
