FlashNotez
It's a problem that we and many of our friends share: we have a lot of new terminology and information we need to memorize for our classes: from polyatomic ions to the dates of historical revolutions. We have notes for our classes, but it just takes so long to type them into flashcards... and the ones available on the internet aren't really specific to our classes either.
That's what we made FlashNotez for! You put in your notes, you get out flashcards in the best way possible. Clear, succinct, and in a question-answer format that is scientifically proven to help you learn better.
Our journey involved:
Cohere! Determination! The power of newly formed friendships! All of the above!
Challenges
Integrating the components and the database! Still something we're working on. We have an amazing flashcard interface, the cohere code, the progress tracker, and the pomodoro timer, but piecing it together is a challenge.
We're proud of
Getting our data properly formatted every time! There were some errors in figuring out how we would import the data and append it to our initial prompt, but some experimenting (and playing around with lists) later, we got it down! Thank you to the amazing mentors for helping us out 🙂
What we learned
Got to branch out a bit! Get some more practice with APIs, how to prompt Cohere, and design good layouts. Perhaps most valuable was what we learnt we could not do: use Figma to visually design our website and then export it with usable code. Don't let anyone fool you - the extensions do not work.
What's next for FlashNotez
Improving the UI! Right now it's a little bit of work because we chose to prioritize the quality of the generated cards and the website, leaving insufficient time for integration. We're working on streamlining it.
After that, we'd love to introduce ways for people to collaborate, and an algorithm that will allow for spaced repetition to further improve the learning experience.
