Why I made it

I have used flashcard apps for learning, and I love memorising Bible verses. I used an app for memorising Scripture but when I was getting ready for my wedding I wanted to memorise my wedding vows, and it was clunky to put in other content to memorise in the Scripture app, and I couldn't find a good app to help me memorise them, or anything else. So I put everything I like into one app!

What it does

It's a flashcard app with lots of functionality. Create/generate your cards or choose from a library where there are 1000's of cards across many subjects and 7 languages to learn - it's DIY-Duolingo.

For each card you can record your own voice and listen to yourself for each card. Then you learn those new cards with various game modes: test, review, match, speak and listen - a passive mode allowing you to listen to your decks as a playlist - with full audio functionality like spotify, but your cards and your voice. Otherwise the app uses TTS for every language you can write and learn in!

But it's also an RPG.

Instead of relying on a streak and a green owl to guilt trip you into learning everyday, I wanted users to create a character, and join a party with other users.

The game revolves around you and your party staying accountable. If you don't learn and do your daily tasks, you don't deal damage to the party boss. Quests take 3-10 days to complete depending on the level or if your party did their dailies.

How we built it

I am not a real developer. I've spent hundreds of hours 'Vibe-coding.' 8 months with Version 1 entirely with Firebase Studio as a react website. Very quickly I learnt that AI would and could forget, delete and reiterate anything. The current version is a react native website with Android/iOS, has taken 5 months with AntiGravity and Claude Pro in the terminal. For the artwork, I have also spent hundreds of hours painstakingly photo editing hundreds of images and icons.

Challenges we ran into

Everything has been a challenge. I have had many versions and added more and more features. I told my wife I would be finished before 2026 started.. oh and planning out 20 armor sets for 5 classes, planning a hundred quests.. planning the whole RPG side of the app really stretched my brain muscles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Everything. The quirky quests and items, and the Listen feature. Making the TTS system for every languageBeing able to record your own flashcards and listen to them was a huge game-changer for me when I was learning.

What we learned

Full stack, from creating artwork, writing item names and descriptions, using Supabase database, creating my own tools for organising my content, setting up the many API keys across everything from Apple and Google to RC etc.

What's next for Flashcard RPG

Paying for advertisement. iOS and Android apps are hitting the public app stores before September.

I waited til the last day to submit. I really should have submitted earlier, but in the last 30 days, I have pushed multiple android & iOS updates and reworked entire gamemodes.

This web/app is really two whole apps combined. I've been busting my ass for months on this. Still waiting on my first real subscriber.
