Inspiration
A lack of motivation is thievery for time. At Lumera, we give it back and offer even more to our students.
Education has been plagued by the need for academic validation. So much so that students are resorting to cheating, lying, and plagiarism in order to get an easy A. Not only does this rob them of their opportunity to learn and grow, but it is also a clear violation of academic integrity. Teachers do their best to inspire, but the system rewards outcomes, not effort — and the spark of curiosity is slowly fading.
What it does
Lumera reignites the flame of learning through intrinsic motivation and gamified empowerment. Students engage not for grades, but for growth. Through personalized challenges, progress tracking, and meaningful rewards, Lumera transforms the learning experience into a journey of purpose and self-discovery.
Every task becomes an opportunity, every point a reflection of real effort. By emphasizing self-driven achievement, Lumera bridges the gap between education and inspiration
How we built it
We began with research on motivation psychology — from self-determination theory to affective engagement — to understand what truly drives learning. Then, we translated those insights into design: a sleek, gamified platform that rewards persistence, curiosity, and collaboration.
Our stack blends a modern frontend framework with a scalable backend and adaptive data models that personalize challenges in real time. Every interaction is intentional, designed to reinforce the joy of progress rather than the fear of failure.
Challenges we ran into
Motivation isn’t something you can code. Capturing the nuance of human drive and translating it into digital interactions was our biggest challenge. Balancing reward systems without falling into the trap of external validation required countless iterations.
We also had to bridge the gap between educators and students — ensuring the platform empowers both sides equally, without overwhelming teachers or gamifying learning to the point of distraction.
Technologically, we also encountered some issues. Working with the largest cloud service provider for the first time, while also iterating on an all-inclusive app in under 24 hours, is no easy feat, so we encountered many...many roadblocks. From integrating services like Lambda and SES to simply remembering vanilla JavaScript, there were many grey areas which caused extended durations of frustration but also memorable spurts of relief when components clicked. With that said, it was a great experience with practical insights that we look forward to taking with us into future endeavors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team successfully implemented a system to track missed sessions and point distribution for students, added dynamic calendar functionality that links events directly to individual student profiles, and developed an AI-powered mailing service capable of automatically generating personalized email templates. On frontend, we use HTML, CSS, and Javascript, while the backend, we built a robust AWS-powered infrastructure using DynamoDB, EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, and Bedrock to handle scalable data, serverless functions, and AI content generation. We also plan to integrate SCS in the future to support direct notifications and alerts.
What we learned
Through this project, our team learned how to design and manage a scalable, real-world system from both the frontend and backend perspectives. Implementing the attendance and point tracking system taught us the importance of accurate data modelling and efficient database queries, especially when dealing with multiple rules like students, teachers, and managers. Building dynamic calendar feature helped us understand how to synchronize data between interface and user profiles while keeping everything intuitive and responsive.
What's next for Lumera
Lumera is just getting started. Next, we’re expanding our platform to integrate AI-driven mentorship, collaborative quests, and classroom analytics that empower teachers to see beyond grades.
Our vision is a world where learning feels alive again — where students chase understanding, not validation. Lumera will continue to evolve as a companion in that journey, giving time, meaning, and motivation back to those who need it most.
