Inspiration
I had this idea when I was having a drink with my Slovakian friend who I studied data science with in The Netherlands. We were talking about how funny the mobile game ads we get on social media were - slop-games as we called them. I thought, I could make the one to rule them all! The idea sat in my head gathering dust for many months... How would I build it? Could make an .io game. I would like if people could also share their own games. It's getting complicated now. Suddenly, I see on Reddit, there are games here?? A bit later, a Daily Games Hackathon you say?? I simply had to do it. I joined a bit late - but I got it done!
What it does
Simple. Mess around and build your own game. Want to just mess around with the gravity? Go for it. You can upload assets for the bird, pillars and background - or just one. No requirements! There is an easy to use masking tool to crop + set collisions on these assets. Then if you wish, adjust any of the game state setting you want. Make the pillars close together. Make your bird super big. Speed things up. Whatever you want to mess around with - and the best part? Post it! Can be used on any device.
How we built it
Being familiar with web-tools and being short on time - I took this route. Naturally, AI had some inspiration. The first web bioller-plate I built in v0. Then over to VS Code where I did my magic and made it work.
Challenges we ran into
Collision collision collisions... Then came the sizing for the different devices. Every fix broke another. Overall the Devvit platform is solid and it was easy to learn.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Balancing life and adventures like this one in a somewhat-healthy way. I also managed to pick up the Devvit platform quickly! I believe I managed to make this concept simple and easy enough to use for the average user. Even though the game is highly customizable, it is intuitive, and nothing is required.
What we learned
Reddit is a powerful platform for games, especially in the UGC category. I can't think of any other platform that could intertwine so nicely with this game concept. It's just perfect. The social aspect really opened my eyes to what can be built and this most definitely isn't my last game on this platform. Time to learn GameMaker Studio I guess.
What's next for FlappyLab
~ Polish the aesthetic ~ A new approach to pillar scaling ~ Support for GIF's !!!! ~ More customizability while still maintaining simplicity ~ Consistent Daily Games and Challenges pipeline ~ Sounds options/settings
