Inspiration
People often throw away damaged items because they do not know how to fix them. FixForward aims to make basic repairs easier, helping people save money and reduce waste.
What it does
FixForward is a planned AI repair assistant. Users upload a photo and describe the problem. The AI asks follow-up questions and provides simple repair steps with a list of tools needed. If an item cannot be repaired, it suggests ways to reuse or recycle it.
How we built it
We plan to build a web app with photo uploads and an AI model that understands images and text. The first version will focus on clothing, backpacks, and simple furniture.
Challenges we ran into
A photo may not show the full problem. We plan to address this through follow-up questions and by clearly explaining uncertainty. Another challenge is recognizing when a repair needs professional help.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a common problem into a clear project idea. We have planned a tool that could help people repair everyday items, save money, and reduce waste.
What we learned
So far, we have learned that a useful AI repair assistant needs more than a photo. Follow-up questions and clear instructions will help users understand the problem and their next steps.
What's next for FixForward
We plan to build and test the prototype, improve the repair guides, and add more supported items.
