Inspiration
City issues are often easiest to spot on the street, yet reporting them usually requires forms, calls, or multiple apps. We wanted to make civic participation as simple as pulling out your phone. At the same time, local events, news, and tourism info are scattered, so we aimed to unify them in one city-focused platform.
What it does
FixCity lets users report street-level issues by recording a short video with automatic location data and details sent to the municipality. It also allows users to create and share local events, view city-specific news, and explore tourist information — all in one place.
How we built it
We designed FixCity as a mobile-first web app focused on speed and usability. We integrated video capture, geolocation, and structured submissions for reports, along with separate modules for events, news, and tourism. The system is city-based, making it easy to adapt and scale.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing simplicity for users with the amount of data municipalities need was challenging. Handling media uploads efficiently and keeping location data accurate under time constraints required careful prioritization and trade-offs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an end-to-end reporting flow from street capture to submission, unified multiple city features into a single platform, and delivered a clear, usable product within a hackathon timeframe.
What we learned
We learned that lowering the barrier to civic engagement dramatically changes how people interact with their city. We also gained hands-on experience integrating media, location services, and city-focused content into a scalable product.
What's next for FixCity
Next steps include report status tracking, moderation and validation tools, analytics for municipalities, and deeper integrations with city systems to close the feedback loop between citizens and local governments.
