Inspiration The project was inspired by the frustration citizens face when civic problems persist unreported or unresolved due to lack of simple, transparent reporting tools. It draws from smart city concepts and uses technology and community engagement to turn complaints into actionable change for cleaner, safer cities.

What it does

Fix It allows users to report local issues instantly via photo and location capture, sends reports directly to relevant municipal departments, enables tracking of status from submission to resolution on a public dashboard, and engages communities through upvoting, rewards, and neighbourhood challenges. Municipal officers gain dashboards, analytics, and AI insights to efficiently prioritize and resolve issues.

How we built it

Built with cross-platform mobile technologies (Flutter/React Native) and a Node.js or Django backend with PostgreSQL, the app integrates Google Maps API for visualizing issues on dashboards. Cloud hosting (AWS/Azure) ensures scalability and reliability. The team includes developers, designers, testers, and project managers working in partnership with municipalities and NGOs.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges included ensuring user-friendly design for all ages, integrating with municipal systems for issue routing, maintaining data security and privacy, encouraging sufficient community participation, and developing AI-powered predictive features to improve city response times. Balancing real-time updates with backend processing was also complex.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a platform that makes civic reporting easy and transparent, successfully engaging both citizens and municipal officers, integrating gamification to boost participation, and implementing AI insights for proactive city management. Launching a scalable MVP version and receiving user feedback to iterate rapidly was key.

What we learned

The critical importance of clear, simple user interfaces, transparent tracking of issues to build trust, the power of community engagement and gamification, and the need for close collaboration with municipal partners for data integration and process alignment. AI and data analytics greatly enhance decision-making but require quality input data.

What's next for Fix It

Plans include expanding AI capabilities for better predictive maintenance, enhancing app features for personalized user experience, scaling to more cities, increasing community challenges and rewards, tighter integration with municipal ERP systems, and launching awareness campaigns to boost adoption and impact.
