Inspiration
The inspiration behind FitTrack came from noticing how difficult it can be for people to stay consistent with their fitness goals. There is plenty of fitness information available, but information alone doesn't always give people the motivation, structure, or personalized guidance they need.
I wanted to create something that could bring those things together in one place — something that doesn't just track what a person has done, but actually helps them understand their progress and decide what to do next.
That idea led me to FitTrack: a platform that combines fitness tracking, healthy habits, progress monitoring, and an AI Coach that can provide personalized guidance.
For me, the goal wasn't just to build another fitness website. I wanted to build a digital companion that could make the fitness journey feel more personal, understandable, and sustainable
What it does
FitTrack is a personalized fitness platform designed to help people stay consistent with their health and fitness goals. It allows users to track workouts, monitor progress, manage hydration and goals, calculate BMI, participate in challenges, and interact with an AI Coach for personalized fitness guidance.
The idea is to bring these different parts of a fitness journey into one platform instead of making users depend on multiple apps or sources of information.
How we built it
We built FitTrack as a full stack web application. The frontend provides the interactive user experience and dashboards, while the backend handles authentication, user data, workouts, progress tracking, premium access, and administrative functionality. We used Laravel/PHP for the backend, MySQL for the database, and HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the user interface and interactions. We also integrated Google Gemini to power the AI Coach. For the payment system, FitTrack uses the Paystack Test API to test the premium subscription and payment flow without processing real customer payments. This allows us to validate the payment integration safely while the application remains under active development. The application has been deployed so that users and judges can access it online.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was getting everything to work together reliably, especially when moving from local development to production.
We dealt with database migrations, deployment issues, environment variables, authentication, premium functionality, and integrating the Gemini API. Something could work perfectly on localhost but behave differently once deployed.
The AI Coach was another challenge because the API configuration had to be handled securely in production rather than simply relying on the local .env file.
These challenges taught us that building an application isn't just about writing code deployment, databases, APIs, security, and configuration are all part of building a real product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to turn an idea into a working, deployed fitness platform rather than just a prototype.
We're especially proud of the AI Coach because it adds an interactive layer to the application. Users aren't just looking at statistics; they can actually interact with an AI system for guidance.
We're also proud of bringing together fitness tracking, progress monitoring, hydration, goals, challenges, premium functionality, and administration into one platform.
Most importantly, we built something that can actually be demonstrated and experienced by other people.
What we learned
The biggest lesson was that building a real product is very different from simply building individual features.
We learned how different parts of a full-stack application depend on each other frontend, backend, database, authentication, APIs, deployment, and environment configuration.
We also learned a lot about debugging. Some of our biggest breakthroughs came from reading actual Laravel logs and understanding what the errors were telling us instead of just guessing.
And we learned that an idea doesn't have to be perfect before you start building it. You build, test, encounter problems, learn from them, and keep improving. What's next for FitTrack Our next step is to make FitTrack more intelligent and more personalized.
We want the AI Coach to understand more of a user's fitness history and provide increasingly relevant recommendations. We also want to improve the community and challenge system, expand personalization, introduce smarter progress insights, and continue improving the premium experience.
Ultimately, we want FitTrack to become more than a fitness tracker we want it to become a personal digital fitness companion that helps users understand where they are, decide where they want to go, and stay consistent along the way.
