## About the Project

### Inspiration
Across the nation, teacher shortages are increasing. In some areas, schools are forced to hire uncertified teachers or overload classrooms with students. As teachers’ time and resources are stretched across up to thirty children, they cannot ensure that every student is meaningfully engaging with course material. As this problem grows, learning becomes less personalized.

This raises the question: why is personalized learning important? The effects of COVID-19 provide a clear answer. As schools shut down and instruction shifted online, learning became less personalized than ever before. Test scores dropped significantly following the pandemic, demonstrating that when students are not engaged, their academic performance declines. Thus, increased student engagement leads to a stronger understanding of material and improved academic outcomes.

Overcrowded classrooms, high-stress environments, and underfunded programs are becoming the new normal for schools across the nation.

### What We Learned
The model for the app is based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, a teaching framework that guides students toward higher-order thinking and creation. Each level of this structure is reflected through individualized lessons, balancing key cognitive skills necessary for student growth.

We also learned the importance of ethical data practices and environmental responsibility. We understand Gemini’s energy demands can be significantly detrimental to water consumption, and so for all non-API app usage, we utilized Ecosia, which plants trees with the revenue from their chatbot usage.

### How We Built It
Teachers upload their course material into the app, which then generates a personalized learning model based on each student’s preferences. This process creates a better understanding of each student’s needs and fosters a more interactive and engaging learning experience.

Fitto allows teachers in overcrowded classrooms to supplement student learning with a personalized AI model. This model engages students’ personal interests—whether they play sports, dance, watch TV shows, or have other hobbies—to create a more comfortable and engaging learning experience. By tailoring content to individual preferences, Fitto increases both student engagement and comprehension.

We prioritized preserving the integrity of student data, utilizing protection such as Firebase to keep users’ information secure. Only administration and students have access to this information, and no third party has an entryway to student data.

### Challenges Faced
As education evolves, teachers need a deeper understanding of how to integrate artificial intelligence into the classroom. Fitto helps facilitate this transition by providing educators with practical tools to enhance their teaching.

Additionally, we are proud to make Fitto free on the App Store. In this way, it is more accessible to students in under-resourced communities, in accordance with our mission statement of all students having access to individualized and dynamic learning tools. We have also made a point to stick to standard accessibility initiatives.
