Inspiration

Fitness, as of recently, has become more exclusive and expensive than ever. Gym memberships like Equinox can cost up to $26,000 a year, and home gym equipment is both space-consuming and expensive. For people struggling with the cost and motivation of exercise, our app aims to make working out engaging and accessible for everyone by introducing bodyweight and aerobic exercises to target cardio, strength, and flexibility for our users.

What it does

Our fitness app allows users to compete in workout challenges, embark on personal fitness quests, and track their progress in a fun, gamified setting. The app incentivizes regular exercise through a points system and global challenges, adding a competitive edge to the workout experience.

How we built it

We built the FitFlare app using React Native for a responsive user interface and ease of development across Android and iOS. We also used Google Cloud Platform for the Google Maps API. We plan to leverage Node.js for any future back-end work since it also uses Typescript, just like our front-end app. For data storage, we plan to use Firebase as it integrates well with GCP. After designing a prototype using Figma and building our project, we ran a completed version on Android Studio's emulator to check compatibility across devices, as well as on physical phones.

Challenges we ran into

Some difficulties we faced included time constraints, storing/synchronizing user data, and implementing features to maintain user engagement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building this entire idea and coming together to create this in such a short time, especially considering the lack of prior experience in these fields.

What we learned

All of these tools we used were relatively new to us. We quickly realized the importance of user-friendly design and the challenges of integrating various APIs. In addition, learning to work with Figma's interface design tools was an entirely new experience and allowed us to experiment with our product's structure before building it.

What's next for FitFlare

Immediate goals would be expanding the workout library and acquiring users to populate our app. Going forward, some fun ideas are integrating AR with running routes, allowing a customized avatar to engage in "boss fights" run and race to checkpoints for "time trials." Some advanced features we hope to incorporate are personalized workout plans as well as educational components, aiming to inform users on the physical and mental benefits of exercising. To acquire funding for future development, we hope to partner with fitness brands and feature their products or services within the app.
