Our Story
Anteater’s Guide to Fitness has been created by four UCI students for the Irvine Hacks Hackathon. Being comprised of mostly new hackers, this project is approached with an open mind, and a curiosity to learn. In the learning curve of creating the website, the programmers were introduced to the world of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Anteater’s Guide to Fitness was drafted using collaboration, mentorship, and peer support. Creating Anteater’s Guide to Fitness has been extremely educational and a wonderful exploration of drafting, designing, and developing an end product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness team is so proud of our growth. The process of arriving at the end product involved communicating each member’s individual strengths. This allowed the team to aid in the way that was best suited to them. From there the team grew rapidly in coding expertise and helped each other grow along the way. Through the Irvine Hacks Hackathon, The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness team has become much stronger as coders and collaborators.
Inspirations
The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness team was inspired by the hit 90's toy Tomagachi. They took the concept of an interactable pet and applied it to individual health and well-being. The hope is that this element of connection will incentivize users.
What it does
The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness is a fun and interactive way to improve your and Peter the Anteater’s healthy habits. Click the buttons at the top of the page when you have food, water, or exercise. This will make Peter happy and healthy! Keep it up until all the bars are full!
Challenges we ran into
The team had to learn to transition from independent coding to cooperative programming. The team had to learn to combine work in a way that would prevent conflict, communicate changes that were made, and relay new discoveries. They also had to familiarize themselves with a new coding language, JavaScript, and how to intertwine it with HTML and CSS. It required research into the documentation of the languages and extensive trial and error. By using what they discovered in their efforts, the team was able to better their knowledge of the languages to produce a working web application.
What's next for The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness
The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness team hopes to expand the website into an app that implements an API for location-based recommendations, a push notification system for medication, an expanded list of customizable characters, and a more complex design concept.
Regarding the push notification system, The Anteater’s Guide to Fitness team plans to use Google Gmail APIs. This would allow the user to effectively receive reminders while incorporating them into a calendar. The team plans on using the Google Calender APIs so the user can view goals they have met in the past, as well as track patterns in their daily fitness and consumption.
