Inspiration

As someone who loves to skate, I usually always lost motivation because I had to skate alone. The same thing applied to my gym journey as well. Hence, I created fitmate so you don't have to undergo your athletic journey alone and you can find people within your vicinity with the same sports interests.

What it does

FitMate is a platform that connects athletes with nearby fitness enthusiasts based on shared sports interests and proximity. It helps users find workout partners and provides location-based information on how far they are from each other, making it easy to meet up and stay active together.

How I built it

Fitmate was built from scratch as a solo project starting yesterday as I couldn't find teammates. It was built using HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the front end, as well as NodeJS for the backend.

Challenges I ran into

The major problem I ran into was the issue of time as there were so many additional functions I wanted to implement but I couldn't because of the size of my team as well as the available time given. I also ran into a very long problem of getting the values from the select sport screen to be used as an argument on the main screen to display athletes.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of building FitMate entirely on my own, from concept to execution. Successfully integrating the Google Maps API to calculate proximity between athletes was a major accomplishment, along with designing a clean, intuitive user interface. Creating a platform that helps people connect through fitness and brings athletes together based on location and shared interests is something I'm really proud of. Although the UI and overral site still needs moer polishing, I'm excited to continue working on it even after VandyHacks.

What I learned

Working on FitMate taught me a lot about full-stack development, especially integrating third-party APIs like Google Maps to enhance user experience. I also gained a deeper understanding of managing user data, handling location-based services, and building responsive, intuitive interfaces. Since I worked on the project alone, I learned how to effectively manage time, break down complex tasks, and stay motivated throughout the development process.

What's next for FitMate

I will personally continue working on adding more functionality to FitMate. For example, a map that shows your location as well as the location of similar interest atheletes near you. I also want to create a friend system to be able to send friend requests to and message athletes that you connect with. Lastly, I want to implement the explore tab which will be a social media hub for athletes to post their videos, pictures and thoughts. Your feed will be based off athletes of similar interests.
