Inspiration

The first step is to find inspiration for your project. My project, FitLogic, was born from a need in my own life – determining what to wear depending on an activity. I have a significant portion of my wardrobe focused toward streetwear and vintage, and although I love those aspects, there has been many times where I’ve had trouble deciding what will work well enough for an event or a certain type of weather. I wanted to create something that could help me pick outfits faster while allowing me to keep my personal style intact.

What it does

FitLogic uses a web-based interface that creates outfit suggestions based on a user’s clothing items and selected occasion (or weather). Using the clothing items they have categorized as being streetwear, casual, etc., FitLogic suggests combinations of clothing items that fit the needs of the selected occasion. Ultimately, FitLogic wants to provide a quicker, easier way to determine what to wear.

How we built it

FitLogic was developed using JavaScript and Node.js with Express. FitLogic’s back-end is responsible for managing the clothing data and applying logic to ensure that appropriate outfit matches are generated for users’ inputted information. FitLogic’s front-end is responsible for providing users the opportunity to add clothing items to their database and selecting the occasion (weather) that they want to dress for. Logic is then applied within the back-end to create outfit combinations based on the tags that were previously assigned to each piece of clothing.

Challenges we ran into

Designing an efficient yet uncomplicated logic system that would allow FitLogic to successfully pair clothing items was one of the largest problems faced throughout the development process. Additionally, creating a method for structuring clothing categories that provided consistency, yet allowed for flexibility was another large hurdle. Lastly, developing FitLogic in such a manner that it remained relatively simple, yet still provided a sense of value and purposeful use was a final challenge faced.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am extremely proud of transforming an every day problem into a fully functional web application. FitLogic takes user input directly related to their current situation, and generates suitable outfit combinations. This shows how an individual's personal style may be defined through structured categories. Overall, I enhanced my ability to develop logical systems behind a web application, as well as connecting these systems to interfaces that end-users interact with.

What we learned

As a result of this experience, I understand how critical data organization and logical design are when creating web applications that replicate real world decision-making processes. In addition, I gained better knowledge about using JavaScript, Express routing, and how user interactions influence web application behaviors. Finally, I found out how to take my interest in areas such as streetwear and vintage fashion and transform them into technology projects.

What's next for FitLogic

For the immediate future, I plan on taking FitLogic to new heights by including features that personalize FitLogic's recommendations to reflect a user's preferences over time. Furthermore, I would like to incorporate weather APIs to increase the amount of relevant data available for generating outfit recommendations and improve overall usability. Eventually, I would like to improve the FitLogic user interface and possibly convert it into a mobile app so that users can easily manage their wardrobes on-the-go.
