Inspiration
Our inspiration came from our individual experiences and interests. One of our team members' interest was towards health and another had experience in teaching. Through these interests we came to the realization that kids could benefit from a fun application that teaches them about healthy habits.
What It Does
KidFit is a simulation game. Our intention was to help users learn about healthy habits. Similar to the simulation game “Talking Tom” there is an avatar which is an animated character that the user can interact with it. Additionally, there is a coin system where the user is able to earn coins by playing games that are intellectually stimulating and enjoyable. The main goal of these games are to teach the children healthy habits through cognitive association and learn about how they can be more healthy.
How We Built It
We used React-Native and expo as the framework to make our application and coded using JavaScript. We also used Figma to build a framework and application prototype. Due to time constraints testing was only done through iOS iPhone x.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the challenges we ran into was getting react-native-navigation to work. There’s no built in system for navigating to different screens so we resorted to a lot of trial and error trying to accomplish navigation. Though we were able to get it working, it is not as smooth as we wanted. This lead to issues in our Git repository and Git branches. Additionally, this was all of our first times using JavaScript, React Native, and Figma. Timing also proved to be a problem since we are not all in the same time zone.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We are very proud that we were even able to create an application! None of us are JavaScript experts and we only learned about react-native a few days before the hackathon. Being able to build this application took a lot of time, teamwork, communication and effort to accomplish. Though there were struggles, we are glad to have formed such an awesome team!
What We Learned
We learned that teamwork is the foundation for any project completion. This hackathon project has shown that projects need to be planned and executed in a collaborative manner. Not only did we learn new technologies, but we also we made new friends, hence expanding our social network. The theme of the Black Wings Hackathon is ‘Social Good’ and this hackathon has truly proven its theme by promoting students to collaborate in creating hacks to address various social problems.
What's Next For This App
Going forward, we hope to finish the backend and incorporate more health and fitness related minigames. A larger goal would be to collaborate with children's TV networks to gain promotion and utilize more aspects that kid recognize and enjoy.
