What Inspired Us

We envisioned a future where convenience reigns—but at a cost. In 2080, automation and immersive digital realities might render physical activity nearly obsolete. As daily life becomes more sedentary, we saw the urgent need for a solution that brings movement back into the routine—not as a chore, but as something joyful and sustainable. Inspired by social platforms and micro-habit theory, we created FitCheck—a space where fitness meets mindfulness, motivation, and modern life.

What We Learned

Building FitCheck gave us hands-on experience with full-stack development using modern tools like React, **Firebase, and **Gemini AI. We learned to integrate authentication systems, real-time data with Firestore, and how to deploy a scalable app. Incorporating Gemini pushed us to think creatively about AI-human interaction in fitness. We also explored UX strategies to make fitness feel accessible, not intimidating.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: Created with React and styled using Styled Components, our UI is built around simplicity and interactivity.
  • Backend: An Express.js server connects to Firebase Admin SDK to handle database ops securely.
  • AI Integration: Google Gemini API powers our smart fitness assistant for personalized coaching and suggestions.
  • Auth & Data: Firebase Authentication for secure login and Firestore to store user data, check-ins, and social interactions.
  • Notifications: We created a random daily check-in system to gently nudge users into motion, helping build consistency.

Challenges We Faced

  • Time Sync for Notifications: Implementing truly random check-ins within user-defined time ranges was harder than expected—we had to account for time zones and edge cases.
  • Balancing AI Suggestions: Tuning Gemini’s fitness suggestions to feel encouraging without being overwhelming required a lot of user testing and prompt iteration.
  • Social Feed Moderation: With real-time uploads and a global feed, ensuring content safety was a challenge. We’re exploring AI moderation as a next step.
  • Inclusive Design: Designing for diverse user abilities and limited physical space meant rethinking what "fitness" means in a futuristic, potentially post-physical world.
