Inspiration

We've all had those experiences where we bought a pair of clothes online and instantly regretted the purchase after seeing and trying on the item in person. With the pandemic, online shopping has become the new norm, which means more and more people are wasting money buying clothes that they end up not liking. Using this growing problem as inspiration, we decided to build FitCheck, an AR app that lets you virtually try on clothes.

What it does

FitCheck lets you preview clothes on your body through your phone's camera using our Augmented Reality system. Simply select an article of clothing and point your camera in the direction of the matching body part, either through the mirror or through selfie mode. Have another person point the camera at your full body to get the best viewing. You can then take a screenshot and see how the fit looks on you virtually!

How we built it

We used Unity's AR libraries and the EchoAR platform, combined with Blender to make custom 3D models, to build the AR app. We used Flutter and its Unity libraries to build the user interface on mobile phones.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into several issues with rendering the 3D models on the body parts of humans through the camera and we had trouble integrating the AR technology into Flutter. Due to the time limit, we were also only able to try a few custom shirts, pants, and shoe models.

What we learned

AR was a new technology for all of us, and we learned about the popular platforms used to create it, such as EchoAR and Unity. We also learned how to create 3D models using Blender.

What's next for FitCheck

We plan on making FitCheck an app that can preview any and every piece of clothing on the internet, and develop a way for FitCheck to be easily integrated into every online shopping store.
