Inspiration

When I first started going to the gym, I dreaded it. I did not want to be there and my gym sessions were ineffective as I lacked motivation. However, when I made a friend who was at the same fitness level as me and focused on the same things as me, I felt more encouraged and motivated to go to the gym as I had someone "looking over me" and pushing me forward. I know many people who quit going after a few times because they lack this motivation. So this inspired me to make this hack. I want people to stay motivated and focus on their physical well-being.

What it does

This hack essentially introduces people at the gym to one another. Users make a profile containing who they are, what area of fitness they would like to focus on (ex: cardio), their level at the gym (beginner, intermediate, pro), and when they typically workout. Now, this app will match people who have similar interests in these areas. Or people can search for other people using these keywords. Then they can set up a time to work out together, which will help motivate both parties.

How we built it

I built it using Python, however, I would like to use HTML and CSS for the front-end and I would like to create a better backend using Python. A google maps API was used to locate nearby fitness centers.

Challenges we ran into

A challenge I ran into was coding how to get nearby fitness centers. I am a beginner to this sort of stuff so I was challenged when I had to code how to get locations and nearby stores/centers. I watched numerous videos and Googled a lot and finally, I learned.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the fact that I was able to come up with an idea and execute it in some form. I am also proud that I participated in this hackathon as I was able to learn a lot and had a lot of fun coding something I am passionate about. I am also proud that I tried new things as I am not someone who likes to come out of my comfort zone so participating in this hackathon was a great way for me to step out of my comfort zone.

What we learned

APIs, coding something can take a VERY long time, silly syntax errors are the worst, coding can be mentally draining, and I learned that I enjoy hackathons, so I will be participating in a lot more now.

What's next for FitBud

Since summer is coming up in just under a month, I will continue developing and working on FitBud and I hope to get more members on this team. I want to make FitBud an actual app and hopefully, get a few users by the end of the summer after launching it.
