Inspiration
My teammates and I often felt very unmotivated to workout during quarantine when we had to work out alone, thus we decided to combine our passion for video games and fitness to develop a video game that encourages physical development in order to progress within the game.
What it does
The user starts off at a baseline level and must workout in order to strengthen their character and defeat different 'bosses' whose difficulty only grows as the character gains strength.
How we built it
We decided to use android studio and java as most of us were somewhat familiar with it as we were all taking it in a coding course. To supplement this, we referenced various youtube tutorials, offical android development documentation and stackoverflow to work out any issues. After planning out and visualizing how we wanted the app to work, we began to implement each section in code.
Challenges we ran into
To be honest, lots. We were familiar with java to a limited degree and thus experienced some initial difficulty in getting the development started. We also spent a long time deciding on what our scope should be for this project as although we wanted to implement many things, they simply were not feasible given the amount of time and our lack of experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
we got the mobile app working, none of us had ever done any sort of mobile development so it was satisfying to see the program actually working.
What we learned
That to get good at something often takes multiple occurrences of failure and perseverance. We also had to be resourceful when it came to solving issues that arose during the course of the project.
What's next for Fitboss
Good question, we hope to keep developing it in our free time.
