Inspiration
The idea for Fit-Happens was inspired by the limitations of traditional fitting rooms, especially for people with disabilities or mobility challenges who find it difficult to try on multiple items. We recognized a need for an inclusive, efficient, and technology-driven solution that allows all customers to try on clothes comfortably, accurately, and without hassle.
What it does
With Fit-Happens, customers start by scanning a QR code upon entering the store, which directs them to create a profile. They can then scan the barcodes of items they’re interested in, adding them to a virtual shopping cart. In the fitting room, they use an in-room tablet equipped with lidar technology to see how each item will fit on a 3D model of their body, receiving personalized recommendations and exploring various outfit options virtually before deciding on final selections.
How we built it
Built with: Languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python Frameworks: Flask, Three.js (for 3D modeling) Platforms: Web-based UI, suitable for in-store tablets and desktop Cloud Services: AWS S3 (for storing 3D model data), AWS Lambda (for serverless processing) Databases: PostgreSQL (for user, session, and scanned items data) APIs: REST APIs for communication between front-end and back-end, barcode scanning integration for item identification 3D capture integration, jQuery for simpler JavaScript handling
Challenges we ran into
Creating the business proposal for Fit-Happens presented several challenges. Defining a unique market position required thorough research to highlight our in-store solution's edge in inclusivity and personalization. Estimating accurate financial projections was complex, given variable hardware and setup costs, and aligning technical features like lidar and 3D modeling with business value required a careful balance of detail and relevance. On the technical side, we tackled challenges such as accurately scanning a person’s body and displaying a 3D model, along with turning our idea into a practical software solution that optimally uses resources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of several key accomplishments in building Fit-Happens. First, we successfully developed an inclusive and user-friendly virtual fitting solution, incorporating an accessibility feature like Daltonic-friendly colors which align with our commitment to inclusivity. On the business side, we crafted a strong business model and proposal, aligning our solution with market demand and creating a foundation for scalable growth.
What we learned
From a business perspective, we learned the essentials of startup development, including the requirements, proposal writing, and creating a scalable model that aligns with market demand for inclusivity and personalization. Technically, we learned how to create accurate 3D body scans, overcome challenges in optimizing user experience, and incorporate accessibility features. Developing a flexible API to ensure compatibility with various retail systems also highlighted the importance of adaptability in our product design.
What's next for Fit-Happens
Next for Fit-Happens is scaling across the USA, followed by international expansion into Europe and Asia. We plan to enhance our technology with advanced AI for improved recommendations, voice-activated controls, and a data analytics dashboard for retailers. Strategic partnerships with tech providers will streamline supply chains and support innovation. To boost profitability, we’ll refine operational efficiency by optimizing supplier rates and installation processes. Lastly, we aim to broaden our target market while maintaining a focus on mid-sized and large retail chains.
