Inspiration

We were inspired by Mackenzie's experiences as a novice fisher, realizing she had no idea if it was legal to keep. Turns out, a lot of recreational and beginner fishers are also frustrated at how complex the rules are and how to efficiently find the information that they need. Fishing rules are incredibly specific and constantly changing: different zones, species, size limits, seasons, and even contamination advisories. We wanted to create a tool that makes ethical, responsible fishing easy, fun, and accessible for everyone—from first-time fishers to experienced anglers.

What it does

FishKeeper is a mobile app that helps users instantly determine:

  • What fish species they’ve caught (via photo scan + AI)
  • Whether it’s legal to keep (based on size, season, zone, and limits)
  • Whether it’s safe to eat (based on provincial contamination advisories)
  • Allows users to track their catches through a FishDex—a gamified personal collection

It’s like having a fishing guide, park ranger, fish collection, and regulation book—all in your pocket.

What's next for FishingApp

  • Expand species database with better AI training data
  • Support additional provinces, states, and national parks
  • Add social features: challenges, leaderboards, shared FishDexes
  • Integrate AR for measuring fish size more accurately
  • Partner with conservation organizations and local fisheries to promote responsible fishing
