We were inspired by the lack of information related to the fishing activity in Marine Protected Areas and how this affects the production of local industrial and artisan fisheries. Illegal and unreported fishing is an overwhelming problem because the fishing activity employs an a vast majority of the population living in the coast of our countries, and the resources consumed by this activities, not also affects the economy in the area but damage an ecosystem in itself vulnerable.
Monitoring fishery with participation of fishermen and low human intervention Provide information of policy, closed areas and navigation Reduce conflicts between fisheries (artisan / industrial) Empowerment of the fishermen in resources care Help to obey the law and regulations Rapid access to information of fishery activity for stakeholders Promotes good practices in fishing
We brainstormed about the problem, finding the best solution that was applicable worldwide, keeping in mind that the protection of MPA's is not an exclusive problem and that there are multiple cultural conflicts in different parts of the world. The next step was to design the app interfaces, and developing the best reports that compiled all the information about protecting MPA and production. By the end we developed the algorithms that were necessary to show the best features of our app and deploy them in the devices.
