Inspiration and the problem
For someone with little or no coding experience, opening an AI coding tool is only the beginning. They still need to decide what to build first, explain their requirements, understand what to do when something breaks, and check whether the result actually works.
A beginner’s idea can quickly become too large: accounts, payments, social features, and several screens before the main action works. Without a clear plan, it becomes difficult to judge progress or know when the first version is ready.
FirstShip helps beginners move from an ambitious idea to a manageable first app. Learners bring their own idea and follow a structured course while building in a separate AI coding tool such as Codex.
What it does
FirstShip guides learners through ten practical tasks across five suggested days:
- Define the first version. Describe the idea, audience, and main action. Review an editable scope with one core workflow, success checks, and a list of features to save for later.
- Build the main screen. Use project-specific prompts to create a clear interface and make focused changes.
- Make the core action work. Implement the main feature and handle missing input.
- Test and troubleshoot. Try concrete checks and turn unexpected behavior into a focused investigation prompt.
- Polish and share. Prepare a walkthrough and export a summary of the project, completed tasks, and reflections.
Every task includes an explanation, a prompt to copy into the coding tool, an expected result, checks to try, and a reflection. Learners return to FirstShip to record what happened before marking the task complete.
All five days are available immediately. Five days is a suggested pace, and learners can take the time they need.
What makes FirstShip useful
The learner’s own project connects the entire course. Scoping, building, troubleshooting, and reflection all relate to the app they want to create.
The course makes good building habits concrete: keep the first version small, make one focused change, test the result, and describe problems clearly. Its “I’m stuck” flow helps learners organize what they tried, what they expected, and what actually happened.
How it was built
FirstShip was built with Codex and the Devpost Learn Skill Pack. The public repository includes the project scope, product requirements, and technical specification.
The application uses React, JavaScript, Vite, CSS, and Lucide icons. It is deployed on GitHub Pages, with progress saved in the learner’s browser. Automated checks cover course behavior, saved progress, and browser journeys.
FirstShip provides structured course guidance. AI coding happens separately in the learner’s chosen tool. Learners check their own apps and confirm their progress.
Challenges addressed
A central design challenge was making the course useful for different app ideas while keeping the first version manageable. FirstShip addresses this through an editable scope, one core workflow, and prompts that incorporate the learner’s project details.
Another challenge was defining meaningful progress. Task completion requires observable checks and a written reflection, helping learners pay attention to the result of each change.
Accomplishments
FirstShip delivers the full course journey in a working browser app: onboarding, scope editing, lessons, troubleshooting, saved progress, and a downloadable project summary.
The course is available online without a FirstShip account or API key. Access to the separate coding tool depends on the tool the learner chooses.
What I learned
I learned to be brave enough to start building my own idea with Codex. I could focus on explaining what I wanted and making decisions about the app, while Codex helped handle the technical work.
Building FirstShip showed me that I don’t need to know every implementation detail before starting. A clear idea, feedback along the way, and an AI coding tool can help turn a concept into a working app that other people can try.
What’s next
Potential next steps include testing the course with first-time builders, learning where they get stuck, and improving the instructions and scoping suggestions based on their feedback.
