Inspiration
When a bat appeared at Markley dorm, it took 40 minutes for DPSS to respond. We realized how stressful it was not knowing where help was or how long it would take. That sparked the idea: why not give callers the ability to track emergency responders in real time, just like you can track a rideshare or delivery?
What it does
FirstConnect provides 911 callers with real-time updates on emergency responders. The app shows location on a map and sends automated text alerts via SMS so callers know where help is and how far away it is. In sensitive cases (like kidnappings), we also designed a discrete “Pizza Delivery” feature to protect victims while still sharing critical info.
How we built it
Swift for iOS app interface, JavaScript with Twilio for SMS delivery, Google Maps API for live location tracking
Challenges we ran into
Synchronizing live map data with the mobile interface, Handling edge cases for privacy and safety during emergencies, designing a balance between transparency and discretion in sensitive scenarios
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Developing working prototype, figuring out how to provide real-time tracking data from a vehicle to current user's location, making a Pizza Delivery feature (e.g. for kidnapping cases, keeping text messaging discreet)
What we learned
Coordinating front-end, back-end with Javascript & Swift Missing/lacking features from current DPSS app, how to apply what we learned from EECS class' in a practical way
What's next for FirstConnect
Coordinating our app's features into DPSS' current app.
