Inspiration

Students often have to manage tasks, notes, goals, reminders, and project work across different apps. I wanted to build something simple that brings these everyday productivity needs into one place.

That idea led to FirstCommit LifeOS — a lightweight personal productivity workspace designed especially for students and beginners.

What it does

FirstCommit LifeOS provides a single dashboard where users can:

  • Create and manage tasks
  • Set task priorities and due dates
  • Mark tasks as completed
  • Create and manage notes
  • Create goals and track progress
  • Create and manage reminders
  • Sign in using email/password or Google
  • Get help from a built-in local AI assistant
  • Access their productivity data directly from their browser

The goal is to keep productivity simple instead of overwhelming users with unnecessary complexity.

How I built it

The application was built using React and Vite, with JavaScript and CSS for the user interface.

I used Lucide React for icons and Supabase for authentication. Tasks, notes, goals, and reminders are stored locally using browser LocalStorage, while the application is deployed using Vercel.

The AI Assistant is designed to work locally using predefined productivity-focused responses, so the project does not depend on an external AI API.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was bringing several productivity features together while keeping the interface simple and easy to understand.

I also focused on making the application responsive so that the dashboard remains useful on different screen sizes.

Another challenge was designing the application so that authentication and local productivity data work together without making the user experience complicated.

What I learned

Building FirstCommit LifeOS helped me improve my understanding of:

  • React component-based development
  • State management in a frontend application
  • Browser LocalStorage
  • Supabase authentication
  • Responsive UI design
  • Vite-based project development
  • Deploying a web application with Vercel
  • Designing a project around real user needs

Most importantly, I learned that a useful application does not have to be complicated. A focused idea with a clean user experience can make a project much more practical.

What's next

Future improvements could include:

  • Task history
  • More language and localization support
  • Advanced task filtering
  • Calendar integration
  • Cloud synchronization
  • More intelligent AI assistance
  • Additional productivity analytics

Conclusion

FirstCommit LifeOS is my attempt to build a simple personal operating system for everyday student life — a place to plan, organize, and stay focused.

Plan better. Focus better. Build better.
