Inspiration

Every developer has experienced the frustration of opening an unfamiliar GitHub repository and spending hours trying to understand its architecture, folder structure, technologies, and code flow before making the first contribution. We wanted to eliminate that learning curve and make open-source onboarding significantly faster.

This inspired us to build FirstCommit AI—an AI-powered Repository Intelligence Platform that helps developers understand any public GitHub repository in minutes instead of hours.

What it does

FirstCommit AI transforms any public GitHub repository into an interactive learning experience.

The platform automatically:

  • Analyzes repository architecture
  • Detects languages, frameworks, and technologies
  • Explains folder structures
  • Generates AI-powered repository summaries
  • Creates personalized onboarding roadmaps
  • Enables AI-powered conversations with the repository
  • Helps developers understand unfamiliar codebases before making their first contribution

Instead of reading hundreds of files manually, developers receive structured insights through a modern, intuitive dashboard.

How we built it

Frontend

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Framer Motion
  • shadcn/ui

Backend

  • Python
  • FastAPI

AI & Repository Analysis

  • OpenAI APIs
  • GitHub API
  • Repository parsing engine
  • Custom repository knowledge engine
  • Folder explanation engine
  • AI summary generation pipeline

Challenges we ran into

Building the project within a limited hackathon timeframe presented several challenges:

  • Designing a scalable repository analysis pipeline
  • Creating an intuitive dashboard for complex repository insights
  • Maintaining consistent futuristic UI across multiple pages
  • Handling repository parsing efficiently
  • Managing Git merge conflicts while multiple team members worked simultaneously
  • Resolving deployment and Windows path limitations during development

Despite these challenges, we successfully completed the core functionality and delivered a working MVP.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a complete AI-powered repository intelligence platform
  • Designed a premium futuristic developer experience
  • Created an interactive dashboard for repository exploration
  • Implemented repository summaries, folder explanations, and onboarding roadmap generation
  • Built a modular architecture that can be extended with additional AI capabilities

What we learned

Throughout this hackathon, we improved our understanding of:

  • Large-scale React and Next.js architecture
  • AI-assisted developer tooling
  • FastAPI backend development
  • Git collaboration and conflict resolution
  • Modern UI/UX design principles
  • Repository analysis and developer onboarding workflows

What's next for FirstCommit AI

We plan to expand FirstCommit AI with:

  • Support for private repositories
  • Multi-repository knowledge graphs
  • Code search powered by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Pull request assistance
  • Automatic documentation generation
  • Architecture visualization
  • Personalized AI mentor for open-source contributors

Our long-term vision is to make FirstCommit AI the fastest way for developers to understand, explore, and contribute to any GitHub repository.

Submission Note

During the final submission process, we encountered an unexpected Devpost platform issue that prevented us from attaching the demo video and project links before the deadline. The project, source code, and core functionality were completed successfully, but the platform repeatedly failed to accept the required fields despite multiple attempts. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and would be happy to provide the demo video and repository links separately if permitted.
