Inspiration

As first-gen students ourselves, we understand what it's like to be new to the American education system. If it was not for our friends and mentors we would most likely struggled to find direction for our futures. This inspired us to create First-Gen Guide, a resource to support other who are in similar situations.

What it does

This website offers essential information to educate people on the importance of education. Along with this main objective, the website also provides tips to help students navigate their lives, motivation to support their mental health, along with tools like the college tuition calculator which can help students make an informed choice about their selected university/college.

How we built it

  • We built this website using Visual Studio Code as our IDE.
  • We used HTML for the foundation of the website
  • CSS to add styles to the website
  • JavaScript for APIs, calculations and overall functionality of the website.

Challenges we ran into

As first-time API users, we faced challenges, especially since a significant part of our website is the tuition calculator. This obstacle motivated us to learn more about APIs, how to retrieve information from them, and how to implement that information in our code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud that our website works the way it was intended to, especially our motivational generator and the tuition calculator, considering that we ran into some errors while building them.

What we learned

We are extremely proud that our website functions as intended, especially our motivational generator and the tuition calculator. These features were particularly challenging to implement, especially the API, and we encountered several errors along the way. However, through perseverance and problem-solving, we managed to overcome these obstacles. Our success with these components has not only enhanced the website's usefulness but also boosted our confidence in our coding abilities and understanding of APIs.

What's next for First Gen Guide

In the future, we plan to expand First-Gen Guide by adding more resources and features that go beyond guiding students to college. Our vision includes developing additional platforms that assist students in landing jobs, exploring various scholarship opportunities, and providing valuable life skills. By broadening our offerings, we hope to empower individuals in need and create a more comprehensive support system that paves the way for their successful futures.
