Inspiration

The college process for First Gen students can be quite overwhelming, so we wanted to create a web application that serves as a central point for all information and resources regarding the application process.

What it does

Interactive Web Application that allows prospective First Gen students to gain knowledge and access various resources to guide them throughout the journey.

How we built it

Through the use of HTML, CSS, Javascript and softwares like Flask, we were able to create an interactive webspace.

Challenges we ran into

While building the web app, we encountered a few different challenges. For instance, a majority of our group members had little to no experience with HTML/CSS so that was a learning curve in itself. Additionally, API integration is another big one since we used external links (Tiktok, FAFSA, etc) which require the data to be retrieved in a secure manner.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were proud to create such an impactful and well thought out project in the short amount of time that we were given. All of our HTML and CSS files were raw coded and in a language that many of us had minimal experience with.

What we learned

The wep application was a good transition into understanding web design and development and gaining experience with the front end allowed us to grasp a new perspective on technology that we use everyday.

What's next for First Gen 101

Our prototype for First Gen 101 is tailored to the University of Pittsburgh but the overarching goal is to implement each and every university allowing prospective First Gen students to not only have access to general resources but allow them to also explore and understand various college cultures, depedning on their needs and wants.
