Inspiration
“The simplest interventions could have helped keep someone alive until they got to hospital. For example, something as simple as turning someone on their side and tilting their head back to keep their airway open could be all it takes to make that difference between life and death.”
It is inevitable, sports injuries happen every day. Athletes encounter it and most of the time either someone intervenes incorrectly or no one can really do anything about it. Only someone who has had a first aid training, or who is already in the medical field can help. This inspired the idea of our app, Sports First Aid Assistant .
What it does
Sports First Aid Assistant is a mobile application that is used by witnesses of sports accidents. Its main purpose is to give the right instructions of how to correctly provide first aid for the injured athletes.
How we built it
Using Android and Machine Learning; after taking the input data from IoMT device, Q/A and camera, the Machine Learning model will classify the injury and provide the appropriate first aid instructions.
Challenges we ran into
Developing an app for such critical situations, where a decision can literally be a matter of life and death, is itself a challenge. However, we chose to use Machine Learning because of its ability of continuous improvement and nature of increasing accuracy over time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of gathering ideas and using technology that is on the rise such as Machine Learning in order to help solving such an important issue that the world faces, and help save people's lives!
What we learned
All team members were introduced to Internet of Medical Things and believe that they have a promising future. We did a lot of research about Machine Learning models that can be relevant to our application. We spent some time doing research about first aid techniques and injuries that usually occurs to athletes. Even though the last point is not tech related, we enjoyed the whole process of this hackathon!
What's next for Sports First Aid Assistant
The next steps for Sports First Aid Assistant is to be more generalized to areas where it could be even more helpful. Over half of deaths from injury could be prevented if public knew first aid. As the technology rises, Sports First Aid Assistant can be updated to be capable of providing correct first aid to victims of road accidents.
