Inspiration

Burns are a prevalent yet under-appreciated trauma that can happen to anybody. They are caused by thermal, chemical, and electric sources, extensive exposure to the sun, or friction when skin rubs against a surface. They can happen both inside the home and outside. When burn injuries occur, they are very hard for those who have no experience treating burns to identify the degree of the burn and to know exactly what immediate first aid should be administered to the victim (as care differs for each type of burn). Immediate care is crucial in aiding burn victims as it can prevent heavy scarring, infection, and deep trauma in the skin, which can happen when treatment is delayed or not provided.

What it does

We created First Aid to assist burn victims. First Aid analyzes photos of burns provided by users and identifies the burn degree, suggests immediate assistance, and provides wellness resources.

How we built it

First Aid was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and hosted on Qoom. Microsoft Azure was used to create the resource group and resources for the project. Custom vision ai was utilized to build the image classifier that detected the degree of burn. IBM Watson to build the chatbot.

Challenges we ran into

One of the first challenges that my teammate and I encountered while building our app was creating image datasets for burns, as there were no image datasets on the web that we could use to test or train our image classifier (as our idea was relatively new). We sorted through many images, scanning for those with clear areas of injury, to create a dataset which we could use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

My teammate and I did not know of this hackathon until today, so we are proud of the fact that we were able to create an image classifier, web page, and chatbot in a day!

What we learned

Through our project, we learned just how painful burns can be, and just how necessary technology like First Aid is for burn victims to help them prevent further injury due to lack of treatment.

What's next for First Aid: Treatments for injured epidermis and dermis

Our next steps for First Aid are to improve our data set to eliminate misclassifications that may occur, along with expanding our dataset to include 4th and 5th-degree burns. We hope that First Aid can truly help burn victims and burn survivors and provide them aid in their most traumatic hour.
