Inspiration

Most people watch TV passively. Sports fans miss key moments, movie viewers lose context, and families struggle to keep everyone engaged. Traditional second-screen experiences require phones or laptops, breaking the living-room flow. Fire TV has the screen, voice, and remote — but no intelligent companion that truly understands what’s playing. We wanted to build something that makes the living room smarter without adding friction.

What it does

FireTV Sage is an AI-powered viewing companion that sits alongside your content. It listens, watches, and reacts in real time — surfacing smart highlights, context cards, trivia, stats, and personalized suggestions without ever making you leave the couch. It detects key moments (goals, dramatic scenes, plot points) and presents relevant information through lightweight overlays controlled by voice or remote.

How we built it

We built a demo-ready Fire TV app targeting Fire OS / Vega OS. The core flow includes:

  • Content detection (metadata + simulated screen/audio cues for key moments)
  • Real-time overlay system for highlights, context cards, and interactive elements
  • Voice and remote control integration
  • Basic personalization logic based on content type

We used React Native for the UI, Amazon’s Fire TV tools and simulators for testing, and AI services for moment detection and content understanding. The demo focuses on sports and movie scenarios with sample content.

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting reliable real-time moment detection without official live content APIs was harder than expected
  • Balancing information density so overlays feel helpful instead of distracting
  • Making voice commands feel natural while keeping the remote path equally smooth
  • Testing across Fire TV simulator and real device constraints under time pressure

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Shipped a working Fire TV demo that reacts to key moments in real time
  • Created a non-intrusive overlay system that doesn’t break the viewing experience
  • Successfully combined voice + remote control in a single coherent flow
  • Proved the concept of an AI companion that stays on the big screen instead of pushing users to a phone

What we learned

  • Living-room UX is very different from mobile or web — less is more
  • Real-time AI features need careful timing; too early or too late and the value disappears
  • Fire TV’s voice + remote combination is powerful when designed together rather than separately
  • Friction logs and honest feedback on tools help more than polished demos alone

What's next for FireTV Sage

  • Better real-time content understanding (improved moment detection and multi-modal input)
  • Deeper personalization based on household preferences
  • Support for more content types (live sports, news, educational shows)
  • Expanded interactive features (live polls, shared family moments, deeper stats)
  • Exploration of computer vision for richer on-screen awareness
