Inspiration
we like cute animals and developing software, so we decided to make something cute and helpful ^^
What it does
FireFoxxo walks around the bottom of your browser. It is more than just a Firefox extension -- being a helpful fox and your virtual assistant, she keeps you company, provides shortcuts to surf the web, keeps track of your Clipboard History, and keeps track of the time you spent on your browser.
How we built it
we used JavaScript and the Browser Extensions api to display the fox and keep track of the data
Challenges we ran into
we had minimal Browser Extension development experience, and one of us had not done web development in a year. sometimes, it gets difficult to debug when we do not know how tooling works. For example there are three different consoles being used to monitor the scripts which we did not know of and spent some time wondering whether our code was working
Accomplishments that we're proud of
we managed to get FireFoxxo to walk around the screen, and build a coherent UI for the actions that can be performed when FireFoxxo is clicked. overall, it felt really satisfying to have made a cute fox walk around the screen and help us surf the web.
What we learned
we learnt a lot about Browser Extension Development, as well as its potential and limitations
What's next for FireFoxxo
even though FireFoxxo provides many utility tools, we feel that it could be gamified to attract users by either including some progression for the fox to have cosmetics. This extension could also be put into context to encourage a target audience to monitor their daily browser usage.
