Inspiration
School Chromebooks are always incredibly locked-down, so we wanted a learning-based AI model running entirely locally off of the chromebook, with a small enough file size that performance is not impacted whatsoever.
What it does
The model runs through a chrome extension that only takes about 20 minutes to set up, but once it's running, it can help students learn any topics they're struggling with, without ever giving them the answer directly. It also has integration with canvas, so if prompted, it can read your classes and upcomming assignments to better understand what you need help with. It also has single sign on authentication, so students will only need to be signed on once, and the browser will keep them logged in for ease of access.
How we built it
Nate handled the authentication, mateo handled the AI model and canvas integration, anthony set up the front end UI, and Jasmine helped with the art design and the concepts.
Challenges we ran into
coordinating meetings was tricky across the four of us, and managing scope creep was quite tricky. I think next time we plan to go for something less ambitious, but this project was still fun.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our app works consistently, and every function we set out to design originally ended up being implemented. We worked together quite effectively, and are all quite proud of our work.
What we learned
Typescript is annoying and safeguarding an AI takes a lot more work than originally anticipated.
What's next for Mente
Our goal is to integrate it into more programs used by schools, and inevitably sell it to school districts to install in the chromebooks for their students.
