Inspiration
The idea for the fire safety lens for Snapchat was inspired by the need to educate and raise awareness about the importance of fire safety and proper use of fire extinguishers in a fun and interactive way.
What it does
The lens simulates a realistic fire emergency scenario. To start the simulation, the user needs to scan the floor and place the trash, then scan the wall and place the virtual fire alarm and extinguisher. Once all objects are in place, the user can tap on the alarm to trigger the alarm sound, then take the virtual fire extinguisher, pull the pin and aim it at the fire to put it out. The lens is designed to educate and raise awareness about fire safety and the proper use of fire extinguishers through an interactive and realistic simulation experience.
How we built it
To construct the lens, we utilized the lens studio's world tracking and world mesh features to scan the floor and wall and place the virtual fire objects. We then employed the lens studio's powerful VFX tools to simulate realistic visual effects and utilized custom shaders to enhance the realism of the simulation.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges faced in building the lens include creating a realistic and engaging simulation while ensuring accuracy in the use of fire extinguishers and foam colliding with the fire and putting it out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of the things we're most proud of is the level of engagement and interactivity that we were able to achieve with the lens. We believe that this level of engagement is crucial in order to effectively educate users about fire safety and the proper use of fire extinguishers. Additionally, we're proud of the level of realism and accuracy that we were able to achieve in the simulation, which helps users to better understand the importance of fire safety and preparedness in a real-life scenario.
What we learned
We learned about the world mesh, lens studio's powerful VFX graph editor, and material editor.
What's next for Fire Safety
Future plans include updates and improvements to the lens, optimization for different devices and platforms, and the incorporation of new technologies and advancements in lens development. The lens could be used as a tool for training and education in fire safety in various settings such as schools, offices, and public buildings.
